By the end of the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Zendaya and Cher, fashion icons, managed to draw yet another parallel in their relationship. During the ceremony, the performer dressed like the iconic singer and introduced her to the attendees—Cher, the latest addition to the Cleveland museum.
The actress looked chic in a sparkling Bob Mackie dress from 2001, which flaunted a very daring and open bodice with slender straps around the mid-section. A dress designed by famed designer Bob Mackie that Cher had donned back in 1972, the gown bore striking similarities. Zendaya's dark locks were straightened out with a middle parting and left cascading at her back, paying tribute to the diva musician.
In honor of Cher, the actress wore a vintage 2001 Bob Mackie gown. At the ceremony, Zendaya said, "Thank you, Cher. Thank you for being an advocate, for being an ally, for paving the way for so many people to exist and speak their truth."
The incredibly talented Bob Mackie, an American costume designer, has worked quite a lot with Cher during her dazzling music career. Mackie dressed the star in dozens of gravity-defying, barely-there designs throughout the decades—be it the jeweled see-through sauna suit she donned at the 1974 Met Gala to the now infamous costume Cher wore to the 1986 Academy Award show that came complete with a mini skyscraper feathered hat. Mackie even crafted Cher a Cleopatra costume for Halloween, in which Mackie made a costume that was so perfectly glamorous in 1988 that even by Hollywood's high standards, it was a sight to behold. The things I designed for her were all over the press, in almost every country, to the extent that every time I know they told me when their readers next saw her, they wore one. Mackie said in one of his interviews with Fashionista in 2019.
While Cher and Mackie's bond has seemed to fuel creativity among other stars even today, it is very unlikely that the two will work on another project. When questioned whether she would be wearing Mackie during her performance at Victoria's Secret, held a month ago, Cher answered firmly in the negative. When the reporter from Entertainment Tonight blurted out that Cher still "could bring it," "Cher reminded us all about the past, rather unnecessarily. She responded, "I've brought it, baby."
